IVF Abroad: Advantages, Disadvantages & What to Consider
Choosing fertility treatment overseas is increasingly common, but is it right for you? Here’s a balanced look at the advantages and disadvantages of IVF abroad.
Advantages
Cost Savings – Clinics in countries like Spain, Greece and the Czech Republic often (but not always!) offer fertility treatment at significantly lower prices than UK or US clinics. Reduced treatment costs (including bundled medication and accommodation packages) can make multiple cycles more affordable.
Donor Availability & Technology – International clinics may have larger donor egg/sperm databases and access to cutting-edge technology such as advanced genetic testing and embryo monitoring systems.
Criteria Advantages - Many clinics abroad have different acceptance criteria compared to the UK. If you have a higher BMI, or are older, there are many clinics abroad who are able to treat you. For a clinic list click here.
Reduced Wait Times – Public systems like the NHS often involve long waiting lists. Overseas treatment can substantially shorten the time from consultation to cycle start. Some private clinics in the UK and US also have longer waiting times compared to those in Europe.
Disadvantages
Travel & Logistics – Arranging travel, accommodation, and follow-ups abroad adds complexity, time and costs that must be factored in.
Regulation Differences – Each country has its own laws on donor anonymity, embryo storage, and treatment eligibility, which may differ from your expectations. This must be considered and researched.
Medication & Scans – Reciving medication is arranged differently depending on the clinic you attend. Many are associated with pharmacies locally who can deliver this to your door. Investigations such as blood tests and scans are often required in your home country, and your clinic will usually help you locate one close to home.
Ultimately....
IVF abroad can be a strategic, cost-effective choice — especially for specific treatment needs or donor access — but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. A thorough cost and care comparison with your local options is essential before committing.
On a personal note, I had ICSI treatment abroad and had a wonderful experience. The level of care, medical expertise, kindness and compassion was exceptional - we also had a successful round the first time, despite my age and BMI at the time. However each clinic is different. I recommend researching clinics thoroughly, and have created a guide to help you do this here.
